DAMN… Kung Fu Kenny Did It To Them Again
The wait is now over. Kendrick Lamar hinted to the world a few weeks ago when he released his single The Heart Part 4 that he would be releasing new work this year in his closing line ” Y’all got til’ April the 7th to get y’all sh*t together ” referring to his competition (or lack there of) in the rap game. DAMN. was set to be release Good Friday April 14. 2017, but of course the impatience of the”fans” who just couldn’t wait (or pay) found ways to leak it on the internet before then. If you’re like me and respect the work of the artist you waited until apple released the music legally on apple music and iTunes Thursday evening to witness the genius of the 5’0 giant.
DAMN. is Kendrick’s fourth album it features Rihanna, U2, and Zacari and was produced by DJ Dahj, Sounwave, Mike WiLL Made-It, 9th wonder, Cardo, and Greg Kurstin just to name a few. It includes the hit single HUMBLE which is currently holding down the number 2 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 following Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You and preceding Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like.
Kendrick established a reputation for his lyricism and his revolutionary jazz appeal with his previous work, but DAMN. has a slightly different sort of synthesized, electric and bass jumping vibe. It has some mellow love tunes, and it even has some spiritual references and innuendos. With a title as blunt as ‘DAMN’ you should already know that we still get that unapologetic, raw rap that we love from Kendrick, but here’s something your probably weren’t expecting… a Bruno Mars Sample. That’s right you read it right, but I’ll leave that up to you to figure out what song Kendrick used the 24k magic sample in.
All in all Kendrick never comes to disappoint and he definitely came to raise the bar in the rap game once again and It’s great to know I wasn’t the only one eating syrup sandwiches growing up. Must be the Gemini in both of us.
Here’s The Track list for DAMN.
6. LOYALTY. (FEAT. RIHANNA.)
10. LOVE. (FEAT. ZACARI.)
11. XXX. (FEAT. U2.)
