James Harden Donates $100,000 To Texas Southern University
Houston Rockets star player, James Harden “The Beard”, donates $100,000 to Texas Southern University for student scholarships. Harden brought the first JH-Town weekend celebration to Houston for his 3 The Harden Way Lucky 13 scholarship and internship program where the goal is to provide “higher-learning opportunities for first-generation college students from single-mother households; single mothers attending college; and Houston students from economically depressed communities.” The weekend was filled with a star-studded basketball tournament including names like the newest addition to the Houston Rockets lineup Chris Paul (CP3), Jimmy Butler, Gerald Green, Eric Gordon, and John Wall.
This donation comes at a time where Texas Southern University is trying to cover the recent funding cuts to Texas higher education. “For us, that’s amazing, given the population of students that we serve come from what I consider to be one of the lowest socioeconomic backgrounds in the city, if not, the state or the country.” Texas Southern University President Austin Lane continues speaking with Fox 26 Houston, about having that “kind of opportunity from someone like James Harden, who can help further the educational careers of those students and help their dreams come true, is just phenomenal to be able to have that kind of support from a local icon like him.”
