A Look At The 2017 College Commencements

Graduation is a time for reflection on labors of the past. May is the month where families and friends come together to celebrate a major milestone in an individual’s lifetime. It is still early in May, but the commencement and graduation scene has been flooded with success stories. A couple colleges even decided to switch it up in comparison to the previous traditions.

In response to increasing concerns regarding lengthy ceremonies, North Carolina A&T implemented two commencements. The morning ceremony designed for undergraduates and the afternoon for Masters and Doctoral graduates. However, each ceremony will have different keynote speakers.

Popular Keynote Speakers of 2017 include

  • Hilary Clinton at her Alma Mater Wellesley College,
  • Guilford College Speaker is former N.C. Supreme Court justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson, the first black woman to serve on the court
  • Motivational speaker & author Iyanla Vanzant will speak at University of the Virgin Islands
  • Tom Joyner will give the commencement speech at both Tennessee State University & Shaw University
  • The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has Margot Lee Shetterly, who wrote the best-selling book “Hidden Figures.
  • Joe Biden will give the commencement speech at Morgan State University
  • Katherine Johnson will give the commencement speech at Hampton Unversity
  • ESPN President John Skipper to deliver Tuskegee University commencement address
  • Rapper &  activist Talib Kweli will give the commencement speech at Albany State University
  •  Congresswoman Alma Adams will speak at Bennett College
  • Much controversy around the US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos giving the commencement address at Bethune-Cookman University 
  • Entertainer & actress Janelle Monaé  will give the commencement speech at Dillard University
  • Carnival CEO Arnold Donald, NAACP Chair Roslyn Brock, Trustee Thomas Dortch will all give the commencement speech at Florida A&M University 
  • Actress Karan Kendrick will give the commencement speech at Fort Valley State University 
  • Political Analyst Bakari Sellers will speak at Winston-Salem State University
  • Former US Presidential Adviser Valerie Jarrett will give the commencement speech at Spelman College
  • The  National Urban League President Marc Morial will speak at Grambling State University
  • Entertainment executive Traci Adams is all set to speak at Savannah State University graduation
  • The United States Senator Kamala Harris will give the commencement speech at Howard University
  • Laila Ali will give the commencement speech at North Carolina A&T State University
  • Political pundit Van Jones will give the commencement speech at Morehouse College
  •  Former NASA Astronaut Joan Higginbotham will give the commencement speech at North Carolina Central University

During this season, it is important to remember that this is a time of completion but also new beginnings. This wave of graduates is amongst the bountiful population of pivotal concepts and creations moving our society forward. You all used to be excited about the future and now you are the future. To the Class of 2017, the world welcomes you with open arms. We are all excited to see what the next chapter of life has in store for you. We are all counting on you guys to do amazing things as the next lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and innovators.
