Meet Grambling State’s Ya’Lisha LaShae’: Aspiring Multimedia Mogul and Fitness Fanatic Headed For Unstoppable Success

When you discuss Black Girl Magic, you definitely have to mention Grambling State University’s senior Mass Communication major, health and fitness fanatic, drummer, radio show host, journalist, photographer, model, the woman wearing many hats, Ya’Lisha L. Gatwood.

The 22-year-old Shreveport native has had a love for health and fitness for quite some time, and now she wants you to go on the journey with her.

On her YouTube channel she demonstrates some of the many workouts she does weekly to maintain her sleek physique.

In one of the videos Gatewood shows an everyday lower body workout that tones up the legs and butt in just about a week.

She lives by the saying “Hustle for the Muscle” and she does just that! In another video, she tells her followers to incorporate a booty workout into their everyday routine, just in time for cuffing season you think?

The workout includes: In and out jump squats (15-30) reps, single leg lunges (15-30) each leg, curtsy lunges (15-30) each leg, repeat this circuit for 3/4 sets and she guarantees your booty will tone up in no time!

The fitness guru isn’t just exercising for the videos, she and her father and brother workout daily. They even get up at 5 a.m. on Friday mornings to do strength and conditioning routines. Now, who do you know that gets up at 5 a.m. on a Friday? Talk about dedication.

To be sure that you aren’t left of the train to living a healthier lifestyle, Gatewood posts health tips and workouts daily on her social media accounts.

She often times lets her followers in on the healthy food choices she selects on a daily basis. A few days ago she posted her morning breakfast consisting of 2 servings of oatmeal, 1 orange and a glass of Yogi blueberry slim life tea (no sugar).

One of our favorite tips is when she mentions the healthy sweets! For all those who want to lose weight for the summer, but can’t kick that sweet tooth, be sure to follow Gatewood on social media to find out what exactly those healthy sweets are.

Working alongside her father Yaiwan Gatewood Sr., who is also invested in others health, Gatewood joined him as a Kyani Sunrise distributor.

Kyani Sunrise is a liquid dietary supplement that features a blend of 22 natural superfoods along with the king of fruits- the Wild Alaskan Blueberries.

Kyäni’s mission is to empower people globally to experience more in their lives: better health, more wealth, and a lot of fun. It provides huge energy to the body through essential vitamins and minerals.

Gatewood and her father have been distributors of this product that they use themselves daily for a few months now and they’re excited about sharing the products and the opportunity with others.

ASPIRING MULTIMEDIA MOGUL

In addition to staying fit, Gatewood is a member of the GSU Media Bureau and GSU Sports Media where she has gained experience in her field covering several campus stories and local events.

She is the president of the GSU chapter of PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) and Secretary of NABJ where she has had the opportunity to attend two NABJ conferences, one held in Washington DC, and the latest in New Orleans, where she met and networked with many well-known journalists such as, Roland Martin and Byron Pitts.

“Being a part of NABJ is a wonderful thing, we learn so much and experience many things,” she said.

She got to visit New Orleans television station WDSU, newspaper, The Times-Picayune and media outlet, NOLA.com where she learned the importance of current events, accuracy, deadlines, timeliness and preparation.

After meeting Roland Martin at the NABJ conference, she and other GSU student journalists got a chance to speak with and ask him questions last semester before he broadcast his show News One right from the campus of Grambling State University in the Eddie Robinson Museum.

RADIO SHOW HOST ‘YA’LISHA LASHAE-A-A’

She is a co-host on student-run radio show ‘Mionne in the Morning’ each week day from 8-9 a.m., where she gives daily health, well and wealthy tips.

Her segment on the show also includes horoscopes, celebrity birthdays, and sports.

Her father Yaiwan Gatewood Sr. who has earned the title ‘Mionne in the Morning Pops’ is a huge supporter of the show tuning in each and every morning.

The show keeps you up-to-date on national news, gives out free Chick-fil-A breakfast cards and they’ve given away free tickets to concerts for artists such as Janet Jackson, Charlie Wilson and Jay-Z. All you’ve got to do is tune-in and you may just be their next winner.

CAN I GET A DRUMROLL PLEASE?

When we said she she does it all, we were not joking. Switching gears a little bit, the multi-talented student is also wrapped into a musically inclined family. She and her younger brother Yaiwan Gatewood Jr. are both members of the internationally known World Famed Tiger Marching Band.

The snare drummer said last year in a Gramblinite article that she saw the movie Drumline the summer before she entered sixth grade and that is what got her interested in playing the drums.

Her grandmother and aunt are both former members of The World Famed where they played clarinet and saxophone. Her grandmother suggested that she consider playing in the percussion section at GSU and the rest is history!

At GSU women joined the snare line in the 80s, one coming along about every four years. There are now three female percussionist on the line at once.

To keep up with all that she is doing and the beginning of her entreprenuer journey Gatewood created, yalishalashae.co ,a small branch of the upcoming Gatewood industry, which will consist of media content, fashion and fitness tips along with motivational quotes.

Blessed with beauty and brains, she found herself not shying away from the camera, but getting up close and personal. She adores fashion and modeling, getting inspiration from icons such as Marilyn Monroe for her glow of natural beauty and Rihanna for her everlasting fashion and musical spirit. Check out a sneak peak of a few of her beautiful shots.

Gatewood is set to graduate from GSU during the spring of 2018. We can’t wait to see what her future holds!

But, before we go, here is a look at Gatewood earlier this year featured in a GSU commercial during the universities ‘Day of Giving’ campaign.
