Memphis, Tenn., High School Students Receive $80,000,000 in Scholarship Offers
Everyone knows that signing day is one of the greatest moments in an athlete’s life. From football to basketball players, numerous hours of hard work and dedication is weighed in that college choice. Principal Vincent Hunter of Whitehaven High School located in Memphis, Tennessee wanted students to feel that same joy academically. As a result, he initiated Academic Signing Day. The students are able to announce what institution they will be attending in the fall as well as their total amounts rewarded in scholarships to an audience of their peers, family, and staff.
Whitehaven’s student population is 99 percent African-American and every one of the students acknowledged on Academic Signing Day have earned at least a million dollars’ worth of scholarships. Also known as “Million Dollar Tigers”, these pupils plan to broaden their horizon at colleges and universities nationwide. Some of these recipients have been allocated over 9 million dollars in scholarship funds.
This signing day is a way to encourage the success of underclassmen while appreciating the hard work displayed by these students. This year 80 million dollars’ worth of success was announced to the Academic Signing Day’s crowd. This is the third year Whitehaven has hosted the Academic Signing Day and demonstrated to these young adults the support they have behind them as they begin their collegiate journeys.
