Miami Police Shoots Black Male While He Is On The Ground With His Hands Up
“Hands up, don’t shoot” has become more than just a hashtag but more so words that must be shouted to police in order for them to spare your life. However, in majority of police brutality and racial profiling cases “Hands up, don’t shoot” seem to go into one ear and out the other of police officers. This was the case for unarmed 47 year old behavioral therapist Charles Kinsey. On Monday, July 18th Kinsey was shoot in the leg by Miami police officer while lying on the ground and his hands up. “I was thinking as long as I have my hands up, they’re not going to shoot me,” Kinsey told the news station. “This is what I’m thinking, ‘they’re not going to shoot me.’ Wow, was I wrong.”
Charles Kinsey was attempting to calm down his confused autistic patient when the police arrived on the scene after receiving a call about a suicidal man that was armed with a gun, but later turned out to be a toy truck. While lying on the ground and continuing to calm down the patient Kinsey tells police “All he has is a toy truck. A toy truck. I am a behavioral therapist at a group home.” The police officer fired his weapon three times hitting Kinsey once in the leg. When Charles asked the officer “Sir, why did you shoot me?” the officer responded by saying “I don’t know.”
According to Kinsey, after being shot he was then handcuffed and left bleeding in the streets for about 20 minutes as he waited for the rescue squad to arrive. He is now in a Florida hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. There has been no name released for the officer involved in the shooting but officials say that he has been placed on administrative leave. Kinsey’s wife told local news station “Right now, I am just grateful that he is alive, and he is able to tell his story,” which is often times not the case for so many black males and females that come in contact with a police officer and their gun.
