A Night OF Excellence At The Morehouse HBCU Power Awards

“In a time when the existence of our HBCUs is being threatened, the Power Awards is a shining reminder of the genius and innovation that black colleges generate every year.”

Thanks to the vision of Co-founders; Derek Watkins (better known as Fonzworth Bentley) , event producer Jash’d Kambui Belcher   and Wall Street executive, Roderick Hardamon, who are all graduates of Morehouse, The HBCU Power Awards which has created yet another “platform to celebrate black excellence and to highlight the importance of HBCUs in our communities” through a legendary list of honorees that ” embody the spirit of success and commitment to community that HBCUs have instilled in students for decades.”

On October 20, 2017, at The Martin Luther King International Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. The Inaugural HBCU Power Awards will host, recognize, and celebrate over 1,000 of the nation’s most distinguished, diverse, and legendary leaders in business, entertainment, philanthropy, and civic engagement. Among the honorees, Jada Pinkett- Smith is scheduled to receive the Icon Award.

Jada is a singer, actress, songwriter, director,  philanthropist, wife and mother, and with the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, Jada Pinkett-Smith continues to give back, educate, and inspire us through her plethora of talents and this is why she is an Icon.

We’ve grown with her and she’s been inspiring us since began her career as  Lena on  A Different World, the show shows that has been displaying HBCU life across the world for more than 30 years. For some of us A Different World introduced us to not only HBCUs, but black culture, black excellence, black pride, and black history. Jada along with the many other memorable characters helped us realize and remember the greatness and importance of HBCUs and HBCU culture.

The HBCU power awards were created  to honor the “achievements and accomplishments of HBCU alumni and supporters who are making innovative and leading-­edge achievements in business, sports, philanthropy, media, music, technology, TV, film, politics, civil service and fashion.”, But is also a fundraising initiative that will allow need-based scholarships to be offered at Morehouse College.

Furthermore, The Night Of Excellence is also proud to announce that RCA recording artist H.E.R. has been added to the line up along with a great list of honorees including; Coltrane Curtis the founder of Team EpiphanyKyle Hagler president of Next ManagementNzinga Shaw Chief Diversity Officer for the Atlanta HawksKeinon Johnson VP of Urban Promotions at Interscope Records, Phylicia Fant Senior VP,  of Publicity at Warner Bros RecordsBeverly Anderson Executive VP of Cards & Retail Services at Wells Fargo and Rob Rumley Chairmen for  Atlanta Housing Authority. The show will be Co- Hosted by Actor and choreographer, Derek “Fonzworth Bentley” Watkins, supermodel, Jessica White, and actor/comedian Deon Cole.
