Texas Southern University Lady Tigers’ Wins 2017 SWAC Softball Championship

Coach Worley Barker and the Lady Tigers win their third Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball championship by defeating last year’s champion Alabama State in a 7-6 victory. The Lady Tigers will go on to face No. 9 Texas A&

M in the 2017 NCAA Softball Tournament in College Station, Texas at 6:30pm on Friday, May 19, 2017. Before the tournament started, Coach Barker said that their “first goal is to sweep, and if for some reason we don’t sweep, we want to win the series, and that’s has been our challenge.” Well the Lady Tigers definitely came and conquered the SWAC tournament this past weekend at Barbara Williams Softball Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.

With third-year pitchers Lauren Rodriguez, a junior from Jersey Village, and Jasmine Fulmore, a junior from Washington, back this year, the Lady Tigers had no problem in the circle. Rodriguez and Fulmore, the league Pitcher of the Year, are declared as being SWAC’s best starting duo. Rodriguez also named SWAC tournament Most Valuable Player, along with the defense helped to finish the final inning with “3 up and 3 down.”

The Lady Tigers that led at the plate consisted of Jocilynn Ellis (.387 BA, 27 R), Dominique Tello (.347 BA, 30 R, 24 RBI, 42 H), and Madilynn Marek (.330 BA, 32 H, 22 RBI), the 2017 SWAC Freshman of the Year.
The following Lady Tigers were named All-Tournament team: Jasmine Fulmore, Lauren Rodriguez, Jocilynn Ellis and Sierra Valdez. With these women being juniors, Texas Southern University will pick up where they left off and hopefully for a second time compete for a two-peat win in the 2018 SWAC Softball Championship.

If you would like to cheer on the Lady Tigers, you can catch the game against Texas A&M on ESPN3.
