#WeWillNotShutUpAndDribble – The Whole Story Unfolded
Thursday February 15, 2018 on Uber UNINTERRUPTED Rolling With The Champion, Cari Champion shared her newest episode featuring NBA players, Lebron James and Kevin Durant, who discussed their “All -Star weekend goals, the pressures of being an athlete, social injustice and the current climate in politics.”
When asked about the political climate James Responded
“The climate is hot, The No. 1 job in America, the appointed person is someone who doesn’t understand the people. And really don’t give a f–k about the people. When I was growing up, there was like three jobs that you looked [up to] for inspiration. It was the president of the United States, it was whoever was best in sports and it was the greatest musician.
“You never thought you could be them, but you can grab inspiration from them. I never felt I could be the president of the United States, but I grabbed inspiration from that. And this time right now, with the president of the United States, it’s at a bad time. And while we cannot change what comes out of that man’s mouth, we can continue to alert the people that watch us, that listen to us, (that) this is not the way.”
Durant agreed and responded by saying,
“When we’re talking about leadership, and what’s going on in our country, it’s all about leadership, And I learned that from basketball. I learned a lot of life skills from playing basketball. You need to empower people, you need to encourage people. And that’s what builds a great team. And I feel like our team as a country is not ran by a great coach.”

Both men have always been very vocal about their views on Trump, but this time Fox News Host Laura Ingraham found it upon herself to make comments towards NBA players, Lebron James and Kevin Durant, regarding their political opinions claiming that they should just “shut up and dribble.” This current scandal has boiled an upheaval in the seemingly never ending controversy of sports and politics. The fact that we are living through this ongoing controversy between sports and politics is quite interesting to me when we live in a country that claims “Freedom of Speech” as a right in the the First Amendment of our constitution. Unfortunately, I guess when those words are made by black men, or towards injustices, or against a “president” who can say whatever he wants that “freedom of speech” then becomes invalid and people like Laura feel the need to come to his rescue at all times… (I wonder if she showed Obama the same Love).
Either way it goes Kevin took no time in responding to Laura in an interview with USA today where he deemed her remarks as simply “racist.” In the interview Durant says, “I’m still going to be a citizen here in the US when I’m done playing basketball, and my voice still doesn’t matter at that point? I don’t play basketball 24 hours a day. I live in this world, just like everybody else. I don’t get what she’s saying, but I know what she’s trying to say.” he also goes on to remind us that he “can’t dwell” on her comments or let them “distract [him] from the real goal at hand, “Which is to continue to encourage and empower people around the world.”
Lebron’s response can be watched below,
Of course Laura Ingraham had to ” clear the air” with her response below and even offered for Lebron to “play on [her] court”, as an invitation to appear on her show, Lebron has not taken her up on the offer.
Statement from @FoxNews' @IngrahamAngle on remarks about @KingJames, @KDTrey5. "If pro athletes and entertainers want to freelance as political pundits, then they should not be surprised when they’re called out for insulting politicians." https://t.co/zKZCMXtaxw pic.twitter.com/nh3EmXhwkN

Hey King, Come play on my Court next week. You’re invited on the show anytime. https://t.co/CpXRl5jGzQ

It’s indeed very sad that we live in a time period where people like Jemele Hill and Colin Kaepernick are being fired from their jobs or penalized for speaking out against the injustices of our nation, but people like Don Imus, Bill Maher, Laura Ingraham, and Tomi Lahren can continually sit in positions and broadcast whatever they want and just have to “apologize” when they offend the public.
As Durant sated, although “our country is not [being] ran by a great coach,” it’s our duty to give young people an image to look up to. So, despite our professions or academic pedigrees, just like Lebron James and Kevin Durant, we will use our talents and continue to let our opinions and voices be heard. We will stand up against the negative influences in society( like Laura Ingraham) and we will continue to be positive role models in a society that’s being lead by hate. We will show love, and we will be our own leaders. As Durant said, “We are the American dream. We come from nothing. We rose up in our profession to be able to take care of our families forever. I think everybody in the country would want to do that, so I think more people want to be us than – I don’t even know her name, whoever that lady is.”
