The Alberta Cup is also Alberta’s primary hockey development program. It provides all players, coaches, trainers and referees an equal opportunity to discover the great qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organised, fair regional camp and select team competition.
As part of the program the focus is on developing and identifying the best hockey players in Alberta. They may have the opportunity to represent Alberta at future national or international events. The Alberta Cup guides qualified participants through the development process into the Team Alberta program.
Preparing and training coaches, coaches and referees for the Alberta Cup is critical to the success of the program and ensures high-quality leadership for the future of hockey in Alberta. Hockey Alberta routinely selects only the best coaches, coaches and referees available for development, but ensures their commitment to excellence and fairness in the program.

2024 Alberta Cup: April 24 – 28 (Red Deer)
- We are looking for one Support Officer to head up the safety program for each Alberta Cup team through provincial camps, team training and competition.
- Applicants must be trained to a fairly competitive level with a minimum Hockey Canada Safety Program and valid First Aid/CPR certifications.

Here are some of the criteria that are taken into consideration when selecting therapists for Alberta Hockey development programs:
A) Professional development
- Qualifications and certificates obtained – (CPR/First Aid, Canadian Hockey Safety Program, Sports First Responder, CATA Certification, Certificate or Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy, Certification Candidate in CATA or Sports Physiotherapy, SMCA Sports First Aid, SMCA Sports Taping)
- Attend and participate in relevant seminars

- Memberships and affiliations
b) Experience
- Years of experience in your chosen field
- Scope of experience (teams, responsibilities, events, tournament play)
- Years of experience with this level of athletes
- Previous experience in the region or province (preference given to experience in Team Alberta programs)
c) Experience of hockey support staff
- Experience in the prevention, recognition, evaluation and care of sports injuries of a hockey nature, including return-to-play decisions
- Must be able to handle/repair equipment, sharpen skates, and respond to the needs of athletes in a competitive hockey environment.
- Must have experience in sports scoring and linking.
- Experience in fitness training and testing.
- Implementing a practical program to feed the team.
- Must be experienced in meeting the needs of elite athletes and be willing to spend long hours ensuring equipment and team needs are met as determined by the Head Coach and Director of Operations.
d) Human resources
- Proven ability to take initiative and use time efficiently
- Proven ability to work with other employees
- Proven ability to successfully communicate and work with players at this age level
- Proven ability to successfully deal with obstacles and difficulties in pressure situations
- Proven ability to be completely organized
e) Knowledge of the program
- Proven ability to work toward program goals
- Demonstrate appreciation and awareness of the unique issues that can occur during the operation of an area team
**Preference will be given to CATA-certified therapists; Holders of the Certificate or Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy or candidates for certification in CATA or Sports Physiotherapy*

Please also note that these trainer positions are not paid positions and all therapists are required to complete a criminal record check. Your expenses, including mileage, meals and lodging costs will be covered by the program as budgeted funds allow.
