Local authorities have announced that a curfew imposed by the coronavirus pandemic will be extended for a week in Melbourne, Australia’s second most populous city.

The restrictive measure is now set to expire at midnight next Wednesday in a city of five million people, in an effort to prevent the spread of another species called kappa, which will appear in India.

We have to defeat this virus, otherwise people will die

Victorian Premier James Merlino said. He also noted that the kappa version of the coronavirus is spreading faster than previous variants.

The Indian variant was brought into the country by a traveler from abroad. Thousands of people who had contact with him have been investigated and the number of infected people is now 350.

However, outside of Melbourne, some restrictions have been lifted in the rest of Victoria. They continue to limit the number of people who can attend, say, weddings or funerals, but high school students who are preparing for exams can go back to school and see those who do their work outdoors again.

MTI reports that Victoria Health Officer Brett Sutton believes the kappa variant was a real beast, thus ensuring Melbourne’s restrictions are extended.
