Ernie Marusi, Széchenyi Prize-winning art historian, full member and vice president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Professor Emeritus at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), died at his home on Friday at the age of 81. MTI on Saturday.
As it is written, his ashes are placed in a close family circle at his request.
Ernie Marusi was born in 1940 in Miskolc. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts at Eötvös Loránd University with a degree in Hungarian Art History. Since 1963 he has been a lecturer in the Department of Art History at Eötvös Loránd University, and since 1991 has been a university professor. In 1991-2000 he was director of the Art History Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and in 1991-1996 he was a member of the board of directors of the UNESCO International Committee on Art History.
Professor Emeritus at ELTE, his field of research is the history of medieval and international Hungarian art, Romanticism and Gothic. He has been a Doctor of Art History since 1990, a correspondent of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1993, and a full member since 2001. In 2002-2008, he was Vice President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1997, he was awarded the Széchenyi Prize for “world-renowned scientific, organizational, editorial and pedagogical activities”. The Middle Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary was awarded the Star Award in 2009, and in 2014 he was awarded the Fatherland Award.
His major works include The World of Medieval Art, Romanesque Art, Introduction to Art History, Hungarian Village Churches, The Beginnings of Gothic in Hungary, Hungarian Art circa 1300-1470, Marble or Sandstone Monument, Discovery of Sculpture. In Buda (with Laszlo Zolnai), the image and its likeness, Medieval Art I and II.
