The Ministry of Innovation and Technology (ITM) said Wednesday that Andrea Kadar will lead the National Atomic Energy Office in the future.
Giola Fichtinger, the bureau’s former director general, resigned in April, likely over a corruption scandal. He has been replaced by Deputy Director-General Szapolks Hallan thus far, after Prime Minister Viktor Orban appointed Andrea Kadar as head of the office from September 29, 2021, whose primary objective is to strengthen the Hungarian nuclear supervisory system.
Since 2003, Andrea Kadar worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Hungary in Brussels, then was Deputy Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office for National Security. He has been Deputy Secretary of State for Energy and Energy Policy since 2014. In addition to issues related to mining, electricity, natural gas and district heating, his main field of work is defined by organizational and strategic issues related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and radioactive waste management, but he has also been involved in the legal framework and coordination Paks II Project.
In order to enhance its independence, the agency will be taken out of direct government control from next January and will continue to function as an independent regulatory body.
