Karim Masimov recently fought to host the Olympics in his country, but now the former president is imprisoned for treason.
Amid the escalation of the Kazakh crisis, Karim Masimov, accused of treason, was arrested even though he was still the head of the Kazakh National Security Committee days before. Massimov, as the head of the Olympic Bidding Committee, also campaigned for the Winter Olympics to be held not in China but in Kazakhstan.
Masimov also served as the country’s president, between 2007 and 2012 and from 2014 to 2016, and in 2015, during his presidency, he started campaigning for the 2022 Winter Olympics in his country, and even under the auspices of IOC President Thomas Bach. He pressed for his goal, but it is not surprising that the choice fell on Beijing.
Amid the escalation of the Kazakh crisis, the army has erected barricades at several points in Almaty, especially around the epicenters of protests, including the mayor’s office, which protesters set on fire this week.
In addition, soldiers fire warning shots into the air if someone does not take the warning seriously enough to stay away from military checkpoints.
