About 500,000 Hungarian citizens live abroad. The Hungarian diaspora numbered 190,000 in Germany, 114,000 in the United Kingdom by 2020, and 91,000 in Austria.

In the 2018 elections, 52,000 voters voted against it. In Austria, this can only be done at the embassy in Vienna. In Germany, four cities (Berlin, Düsseldorf, Munich and Stuttgart), and in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Edinburgh, London and Manchester, were selected for voting. In voting on April 3, 2022, those already living in Austria will be able to vote at the Consulate General in Innsbruck, Nuremberg in Germany will be among the potential polling stations, while the United Kingdom will remain the three seats.
