The four-time world champion is concerned about tracks with a long history. Sebastian Vettel thinks it would be terrible if the sport loses places that have been on the calendar for so long.
The composition of the racing calendar will change after Las Vegas arrives with three races in the US next year, but there is also a good chance that South Africa will return. The German Aston Martin driver says it’s great that Formula 1 wants to visit new places, but he doesn’t see it as a good direction to get away from the historic tracks.
“I think it’s always exciting to go to new places, provided it’s really suitable for us. Obviously, we didn’t have a race in America, and then Austin got into the calendar, which was very exciting and became known as the Great Race. Perhaps another great example is Singapore, we hadn’t been there before and now we’re glad to be back this year because it was our first night race.”
“Obviously you hope that every new place you go is a plus, but you don’t want to lose places you’ve been for a long time. So it would be awful if Melbourne was off the calendar and we lost the top trails in Europe.”
Given the growing interest, F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has previously suggested that some tracks could alternate, which Vettel would like.
“There are financial interests in the new locations we’re going to, and ultimately F1 is a company, but I think it’s a sport that’s our passion. So we don’t see it as a business, but as a sport, so the tracks also mean something because of its history or its traditions. I think it should. There’s kind of a mixture. In addition to exploring, you have to stick to places that have a history and a big fan base.”
