At the beginning of the year, it was revealed that the popular streaming service provider, Netflix, was losing money, the reason they saw and still see to this day in users who share their passwords and accounts. By the way, this practice goes against the terms of use of the platform, so it is no wonder that they want to fight this phenomenon, and now they have shown exactly how they envision it.
The new antidote to password-sharing will be the so-called ‘Add Home’ functionality, which will allow multiple households to use one account, and users will pay separately for each additional home after the first.
Add Home is an improved version of the option previously known as Add Extra Member, which was introduced earlier this year in some regions, such as Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. The difference between the two is that with the old functionality, new users can be added to our account, and with the new account, the same account can be used in additional families.
The recently announced “Add a Home” option will soon be tested in Argentina, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
Those who use the cheapest package can add one additional family to their existing account, those who choose the Medium subscription can add up to two, and those who subscribe to the premium version can add up to three additional families. The monthly amount for this in Argentina, converted from the local currency, would be $1.6 per house, or about 630 HUF, and in all other Latin American markets it would be $2.99, or roughly 1165 HUF.
As promised, Netflix won’t restrict watching movies on their devices while traveling, and the account owner can remove connected homes at any time in the app’s settings menu.
We’re curious to what extent these options, which will be introduced more widely soon, will increase Netflix revenue. It will also be interesting to see what they will achieve with the cheaper but ad-supported subscription option, to which Microsoft will deliver ads.
