The airline cancels a thousand flights due to the strike.

German airline Lufthansa canceled, on Tuesday, more than a thousand flights at Frankfurt and Munich airports due to the warning strike announced by the Verdi union of airport ground service employees during the summer peak period on July 27. Lufthansa announced that the cancellation of flights will affect about 144,000 passengers in the period from Tuesday to Friday.

Back to Lufthansa: About 7,500 passengers have already been affected by the cancellation of 47 flights on Tuesday, most of whom had arrived in Germany on Wednesday. Flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Boston, Denver, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seoul to Munich and connecting flights from Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Miami and New Delhi to Frankfurt were also affected.

The German airline said 678 flights in Frankfurt and another 345 in Munich were canceled due to a nationwide strike by airport staff. In addition, the business interruption will also affect flights to Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Hanover, Stuttgart and Cologne.

At the same time, many passengers were unable to change tickets for later flights because the flights were full in the following days. According to Lufthansa, this situation will continue for several days. During the ongoing collective negotiations involving about 20,000 ground employees, the Verdi union announced a one-day warning strike. Ground crews include technical and logistic servers, without whom aircraft cannot take off.

Michael Nijjemann, director of human resources at Lufthansa, has been highly critical of the business interruption, saying it would cause significant damage during peak travel times.
