Bridgeton is a hit again, but this time it’s angry with Netflix… because it claims the musicians stole their TV series, turned it into a play and made huge profits.
The streaming giant is poaching the duo Barlow & Bear for “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Album Live in Concert,” which premiered earlier this week at the all-sold Kennedy Center.
In the lawsuit obtained by TMZ, Netflix claims that the production’s opening number, “Tis the Season,” is nearly identical to the number used to introduce the show’s main characters and settings. According to Netflix, Barlow & Bear took “literally important dialogue” from the TV show.
According to Netflix, the musicians not only stole her intellectual property but also lied about getting permission. In the lawsuit, Netflix includes a published advertisement for the theatrical production that reads: “BRIDGERTON is a trademark used with permission from Netflix.”
number. Not according to Netflix, which says it actually “strongly objected” to Barlow & Bear using the show’s name, characters, and dialogue.
Netflix says the duo plan to perform the musical at London’s famous Royal Albert Hall — and sell Bridgeton-themed merchandise.
In addition to tearing up the TV show, Netflix says the Barlow & Bear piracy will rival the “Bridgerton Experience”… an event in 6 cities where fans pay to enjoy an “immersive” evening on the dance floor, with inspiring cast and music.
Netflix wants the court to stop future production of Barlow & Bear and wants all profits so far.
