Armin Laschet, prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia has been elected as the new president of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), news agencies reported on Saturday. At the two-day online conference that began Friday, Laschet, a champion of the continuation of Merkel’s politics, Frederick Mears, a believer in traditional conservative politics, won 466 votes, and third-party environmentalist Norbert Röttgen was excluded in the first round of the vote.
