What do houseplants feel best in an apartment? There is something for the bathroom – the house

Houseplants are the focus of the apartment, but it’s not just a matter of aesthetics where the plant goes in the apartment: some are in the bathroom, some are in the living room, and some are better in the kitchen, because the rooms are different there are physical conditions. The temperature is different, the humidity is different, and the light is generally not the same.

Szabolcs wins We asked a gardener what it is recommended to put in the apartment to make it really green, fresh and full of life.

Perfect place for indoor plants

According to the gardener, the arrangement of houseplants in the apartment in general and primarily is determined by the principles of interior design, that is, the inhabitants place plants where there is enough space for them, and where their decorative value is most effective.

– The principles of interior design do not always correspond to the needs of plants, and in fact this is much more important than aesthetics. Houseplants placed in a draft, in deep shade or in intense sunlight will suffer, their condition will begin to deteriorate, their flowering will fail, their growth will slow down, and in In the end they could die too. Inside the apartment, individual rooms sometimes have a completely different microclimate, and, for example, there is much more light in some rooms than in others, so important practical aspects should also be taken into account when arranging indoor plants.

Living room

According to the expert, the living room is the largest and most airy room in the vast majority of homes. Here, there are usually more windows and more space. The living room is also the most intensely heated and cooled room in the summer, as people spend most of their time here.

– Based on the foregoing, both small and large ornamental plants can be recommended for the living room, since the size is limited only by the available space, but the living room is where you can accommodate especially large indoor plants, such as the room here you can place ferns, pines, ficus and yucca The chorus dracaenas and palm trees. Indoor evergreens that love strong sunlight, such as croton, mother-in-law’s tongue, coral flower, cycad palm, parrot flower, cactus, cactus, cress, yucca, can be placed near large, properly located windows.

Species that like diffused light can be placed in the less bright parts of the living room, such as begonia, room ferns, gusmania, philodendrons, greens, or flamingo flowers. Indoor creepers are an interesting option for living rooms, which also decorate the walls in a unique way, but in return they need space, which can usually be provided in the largest room. Among the indoor runners, it is worth noting the room runner, pea, zebra, ivy, green plant or climbing ficus.

In addition, almost any general houseplant suitable for a particular room can be placed in the living room, as long as they can be provided with a sufficient amount of light and other conditions. The latter also means that the pot should always be placed in a room where it already receives enough light or is adequately protected from drafts, not in places where there is little empty space for decorating, he says.

Darker rooms (such as bedrooms and guest rooms)

According to Szabolcs Megyeri, it is common to find less equipped rooms in an apartment, which are less bright than others, or perhaps even small in size. Of course, other plants adapted to the conditions belong to such spaces.

Coral flower, golden palm, mace flower, sail flower, bachelor’s palm, crab flower, mother-in-law’s tongue and corn leaf can be placed in more shaded and low light places. In dark rooms, the distance from the window is especially important, so for example, in north-facing rooms, even shade-tolerant species should be assembled around the window, even on a tiered rack or shelving system attached to the wall next to the window. It is important to take into account when calculating the amount of light in a room, not to use the height of your eye as a basis, but the actual location of the plants, because it is easy to overestimate the amount of incoming light if you say: look at it from the wrong point of view.

Water Cycle

The gardener thinks the bathroom is a private room. Two main features are that its windows are not very large, which means that the light is little, and the other is that the humidity is much higher than in the rest of the apartment. So this room is very similar to the conditions of a tropical rainforest.

– Many plants have such delicate conditions, so there is something to grow here, but at the same time, the microclimate of pigeons does not suit most houseplants at all, so a well-thought-out selection of plants is especially important here . Household ferns, bromeliads, mace, weeping palm, water palm, cacti, ivy, and most orchids can all be moved to the bathroom. In the case of the latter, the bathroom is a particularly good place, since these tropical plants live in their native habitat with high humidity and in a place with filtered lighting below the level of tree leaves. In addition, almost any tropical plant can be placed in the bathroom, as most have low light and high humidity requirements, says the gardener.

kitchen

According to the gardener, there is usually little space in the kitchen and there is heavy traffic and movement, so it is not recommended to use larger or even medium-sized houseplants here. He suggests something else instead.

– In the kitchen, plants have a different function, their practical efficacy precedes their decorative value, that is, herbs are mainly useful here, you can pinch them during cooking, and they are attractive, so they also serve as decorations. Mediterranean seasoning and hot pepper can be placed on the windowsill of the sunny, bright and well-placed kitchen window, plant seedlings can be planted here, but ornamental plants can also be placed, for example, mother-in-law, various compact succulents and cacti, African or young violets Aloe vera. Humidity is also high in the kitchen, but humid tropical species are not suitable here, where there is frequent ventilation, and neither hot steam nor the radiant heat of the oven will benefit them. Leaves of ornamental leaf plants that live in the kitchen should be washed regularly with soft water, as deposits can form on them in damp, steamy rooms, impeding gas exchange and photosynthesis, says Szabolcs Megyeri.

The children’s room

According to the gardener, it is also good to decorate children’s rooms with plants, especially during the teaching period, since the natural, soothing green ornament is of great importance. In addition, several important aspects must be considered when choosing plants.

– In the children’s room, species that are proportional to the size of the room and not too large are suitable, it is important that poisonous, allergenic or prickly plants do not enter here. Calendula, chamomile, verbena, sage, harmless Mediterranean spice can be good companions for young children and adults, for older children we recommend aloe vera, succulents, bonsai, or, for example, an interesting and exotic carnivorous plant, Venus flytrap – He lists it.
