All flights to the Canary Islands have been cancelled

Sunday flights were canceled in Spain’s Canary Islands, a popular tourist destination, due to the approach of Storm Hermine with heavy rain. According to information provided by Aena, the Spanish airport operator, among others, thirty-four flights were canceled in Tenerife, twenty-two in La Palma, fourteen in El Heron, eight in Lanzarote, and four in La Gomera.

The Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET) has issued a red alert for Gran Canaria, La Palma and Eliero from Sunday noon until midnight Sunday. The regional government has ordered an educational leave for Monday as a precautionary measure.

Angel Victor Torres, head of the government of the Canary Islands Autonomous Province, said the storm was expected to approach the archipelago off the coast of northwest Africa from 11:00 pm local time until 11:00 am on Monday.

According to the US Hurricane Center, the tropical storm had weakened to a hurricane by Sunday, but heavy rain can still be expected on Monday.
