After all, RealOS wouldn’t be the name of Apple’s augmented reality platform

Apple’s augmented reality system will not be called RealOS after all, according to rumors, the name of the new system may be xrOS.

According to Bloomberg, the name of Apple’s augmented reality system may be xrOS instead of the previously leaked reality system. XR stands for Augmented Mixed Reality, which is a commonly used umbrella term for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and solutions that combine the two (Mixed Reality).

So far, according to reports and leaks, Apple’s next headset will be an XR solution, not specifically a VR or AR — though there have been rumors of an AR-focused device at a later date. The headset may be revealed sometime next year, although it has been delayed several times in the past, and it could happen again.

Apple’s mixed reality headset may start production next March

The bloomberg He cites people inside Apple who say Apple referred to the software internally as xrOS. In addition, a shell company called Deep Dive LLC has filed trademark applications for the brand name in some regions. The filings specify that the trademark refers to “head-mounted displays” and “virtual reality and augmented reality experiences,” all of which suggest this could be the new name.

Not much is known about xrOS, other than that it will include XR versions of several well-known Apple apps, such as FaceTime, News, Notes, Maps, and Messages. Apple is also working on some form of mixed reality world, which is similar in some ways (though certainly not in all) to Meta Horizon Worlds and the metaverse concept widely popular among many startups and venture capitalists right now.

In terms of hardware, it is believed to have more sensors inside and out and could have a higher resolution display than most of the competition. It will run on a chip similar to the M2 chip found in recent Macs. Some reports say it looks similar to ski goggles, which suggests it could be a smaller, slimmer headset than the Meta Quest or many existing VR/AR/MR headsets.
