Microsoft has confirmed that three of Bethesda’s games will be PC and Xbox exclusives, and while it won’t specify which ones, many are already guessing.
In a recent document, Microsoft wrote that three Bethesda titles will be exclusive to Xbox and PC, though it didn’t say which games exactly. With Starfield one of the most anticipated releases of 2023, there are many eyes and ears tuned in to what developer Skyrim is releasing soon, especially since this is the studio’s first new IP in a quarter of a century.
The multinational conglomerate founded by Bill Gates has been in the news recently due to controversy surrounding Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, with regulators stepping in to block a potential acquisition. Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax, in 2020, and the Xbox maker already owns other studios, like id Software and Dishonored developer Arkane. Having said that, the tech giant has a lot of sway when it comes to gaming, and it seems like they want some highly anticipated future releases to be made exclusively for hardware and OS.
This is according to an Activision Blizzard filing with the Federal Trade Commission. In the document, Microsoft wrote that Bethesda’s “three future titles” will only be available on Xbox and PC. While the names of these publications are left out of the statement, it does go on to say that these games are designed “to be played primarily alone or in small groups,” so many readers will no doubt have an idea of what the company has in mind.
It’s already been confirmed that both Starfield and Redfall – the latter not developed by Bethesda, but published – will be exclusives to both the Xbox series and Windows PC. For now, we can only speculate about the third mystery game. However, it’s already been hinted that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a Microsoft exclusive, so this is likely to be the other skin on the remade slate. It’s just speculation at this point, but the fact that these future titles will be either single player or multiplayer with small groups suggests that Skyrim sequels could be kept from other systems like the PlayStation.
With Fallout 5 confirmed earlier this year, some might be wondering if Microsoft wants this Bethesda game to be an exclusive title as well. It’s too early to tell, but there will undoubtedly be a lot of people who don’t own a powerful PC or an existing Xbox and wouldn’t be happy if it was only released on those systems, like TES6.
