The ball is still in the US House of Representatives, there is no president and no legislature

For the third day, it was not possible to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, since it was not possible to find a successor to Democrat Nancy due to the internal strife of the Republicans in the narrow majority. Pelosi, who led the previous term, even after a total of eleven votes, still no one got the majority vote.

In the House of Representatives, 218 votes are needed to elect a president. The Republicans have 222 representatives, but 20 voted decisively against Kevin McCarthy, the faction’s leader, on Thursday. The Democratic Party has 212 seats in the House of Representatives, but this is still not enough for a majority. Without a Speaker, the House of Representatives is practically useless, new representatives cannot be installed, and laws cannot be passed.

the New York Times information McCarthy, who received the second most votes, promised various concessions behind the scenes to opponents so that the House of Representatives could finally function. According to the newspaper, even in the previous period, the politician who led the Republican faction had introduced a new rule that any representative could immediately call for a vote on the speaker of the House of Representatives at any time. He would have allowed the ultra-Republicans, who make voting impossible, to choose one-third of the representatives of the party who could be delegated to the House Rules Committee, and also the possibility of discussing budget laws in a framework more freely by the House of Representatives, and that anyone could propose a vote on them in any time. Later, many actors complained about the privileges being leaked to the press.

The distribution of votes has not changed significantly for days: Democratic candidate Hakeem Jeffries gets the largest number, followed by Kevin McCarthy, and the third runner-up is another Republican candidate, Byron Donalds. On Wednesday, Republican Kevin Hearn was a new entrant, and divolks were also expressed: Republican Matt Gaetz wanted to see no one other than the former president, Donald Trump, as the new speaker. By the way, Trump asked the extremists to vote for McCarthy.

As we wrote, on Tuesday, a vote took place for the first time on who should be speaker in the new make-up of the House of Representatives due to the midterm elections in November. Although Republicans are in the majority (they have 222 representatives, 218 representatives are required for a majority), the first vote was inconclusive, with 19 Republicans refusing to support McCarthy. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries received the most votes, with 212, followed by McCarthy, with 203.

The second round on Wednesday was similar, with the difference that 19 opponents voted for Jim Jordan, who himself nominated McCarthy for Speaker of the House. After that, a third round was required, but McCarthy still could not consolidate his base. Incidentally, McCarthy hasn’t spoken in the house once since polling began. By Wednesday, his vote count had fallen to 201.

The last time it happened exactly a hundred years ago, in 1923, it was not possible to elect a president in the first round. At the time, then-rival Frederick H. Gillett could only gather the correct number of votes on the ninth ballot. It’s been 164 years since we needed more rides, and now it’s back again. After the impasse did not change at 11 o’clock, the meeting was adjourned until Friday noon local time.
