“I think the whole country will come together and everyone will be so excited,” says one woman. “The girls showed that they deserve to reach the final. We’ll see if we win.”

Many gathered in the famous Piccadilly Circus, where a zone for fans was erected at the base of the statue of Admiral Nelson.

“We’re playing Germany, I’d like them to win 2-0, but any win would be great, wouldn’t it?” asks Leanne, a young woman from Manchester. “But it is significant in itself that they have come this far, and women’s football is just beginning. We are pressing hard.”

England have yet to win the European Women’s Football Championship, while Germany has already won eight, including six in a row. Football was banned for women in 1921, and allowed again in 1971.
