When we think of life on other planets, we are immediately faced with a difficult decision. Based on NASA calculations, the cost of transporting a payload to the International Space Station (ISS) is $93,400 per kilogram. The above study shows that a four-member crew, all female, would need 1,695 kg less food in a mission of 1,080 days. It’s just math that they could save over $158 million with this, and 2.3 cubic meters of free space would remain, which is also no small feat, because that’s about 4 percent of the habitable volume of the Gateway HALO module proposed by NASA.
