Dance culture has been examined from a scientific point of view in Debrecen
Debrecen – The series of international conferences on the anthropological study of dance culture organized by the Csokonai Theater and the Department of Ethnography of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Debrecen between March and June has come to an end.
In March, the academic conference covered the topics of theory and practice, institutional frameworks, education and inheritance, and the April event focused on the anthropology of dance culture and its theoretical and artistic contexts, with an emphasis on common points of dance anthropology and art in theoretical approaches. They also dealt with application.

In the closing event held at the Csokonai Forum between May 31 and June 1, the anthropology of traditional dance culture was the main theme. She gave lectures on the dance culture of urban society, the art of folk dance on stage, the application of historical, ethnographic and anthropological methods, as well as how dance can be integrated into 21st century public education as a cultural content.
The professional program launched in March was conceived by Péter Gemza, director of the Csokonai Theatre, who asked Máté Kavecsánszki, a lecturer and dance researcher at the Department of Ethnography of the University of Debrecen (DE) to organize the events professionally and scientifically.
– Eight days, three conferences, 43 lectures – Mate Kavishansky included the numerical data in his closing remarks.
Associate Professor of the Department of Ethnography of the DE BTK emphasized that in professional meetings such as him, among others, by the ELKH-DE Ethnography Research Group, the Institute for Art Theory and Methodological Research of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, the Hungarian Academy of Dance, University of Szeged, Department of Ethnography and Cultural Anthropology University, as well as the Hungarian Ethnographic Society.
– Thanks to the joint work, an intellectual workshop was created, which created an opportunity to present the latest research results, which will also ensure the professional cooperation of teachers and researchers working in the field of science in the future, – emphasized Mate Kavishansky.
– It took a long time from idea to implementation, but in the end, with excellent partners, in a completely new environment, at the Csokonai Forum, we managed to organize a unique regional synergy based on theory and practice, which also carries out training of trainers, – said director Peter Gemza.
Within the framework of the congress, DE and the Hungarian Ethnographic Society renewed their scientific and professional cooperation.
– In recent years, the demand for art education within the liberal arts education has increased, which is why the university plans to create a treasury that will support basic research in various fields, and thus help establish a serious art education at the University of Debrecen in the long term – said Robert Kemnevi, Dean of DE BTK.
The volume containing studies from the three conference presentations is expected to be published in Hungarian, English and Romanian in the fall of 2023, and the presentation of the book is scheduled as part of Debrecen University’s Science Month.
The program is organized by the Csokonai Theater as part of the Interreg VA Romania-Hungary Cooperation Programme, within the framework of ROHU446 – EduCultCentre, a project called “Transnational Romanian-Hungarian Training Center and Repository of Cultural and Historical Heritage”. The event was co-organised by the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Ethnography of the University of Debrecen. The Institute of Methodological Research and Art Theory of the Hungarian Academy of Arts (Second Congress) as well as the Hungarian Ethnographic Society (Third Congress) co-organized the conferences as cooperating partners.
