Five of the six reactors of the nuclear power plant occupied by the Russian forces had already gone into a cold state, that is, nuclear fission, and thus the heat and pressure generation had ceased.
The last reactor was shut down on Thursday.
MTI stated that the decision was also played by the fact that artillery clashes were taking place near the facility and that the transmission line connecting the power plant to the Ukrainian power grid was damaged.
In a statement Friday evening, Enerhoatom wrote that the rupture of the Nova Cahovka Dam does not directly threaten the nuclear facility.
The explosion and collapse of the Nova Cahovka Dam on the Dnieper River forced thousands to leave their homes and dramatically lowered the water level in the reservoir, which was also used to cool the nuclear power plant.
Since all nuclear reactions stop, the temperature and pressure in the reactors gradually decrease, and as a result, less water is needed to cool the radiant heating elements.
The power plant is currently under Russian control, but Enerhoatom still has employees working at the facility.
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency will soon travel to Ukraine
And the Associated Press reported that Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will visit Ukraine in the next few days, according to his previous announcement. The President of Ukraine and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency have already discussed over the phone how to reduce the risks to the safety of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to Kiev on Saturday as a sign of his government’s support. Among other things, Trudeau paid his respects at a memorial to fallen Ukrainian soldiers.
Canada, like many other Western countries, supports Ukraine with weapons and money against Russian aggression.
