Williams driver Alexander Albon is proud of his team, having secured the fastest qualifying lap on paper in Q2, choosing a brave tactic and promptly driving onto the drying track on slicks.
More attention than usual was paid to Albon and Williams over the Canadian weekend, as the team brought a big development package to the track, from which they naturally expect progress. To what extent this contributed to the new performance in the third quarter, it is difficult to say, because on Saturday the main role was played by the weather: both free practice and qualifying were rainy.
The conditions were the best in Q2: even dry track tires appeared for a short time. These first appeared on Albon’s car, and the Thai also took advantage of brave tactics, after warming up the tires, he ran the fastest lap of the stage.
Thanks to the fact that it rained again later and the situation worsened in Q3, Alboni had on paper the fastest qualifying lap, and although he ended up “only” ninth in the final stage, he jokingly mentioned in his statement that Williams had a better Result in the chaotic playoffs.
“It was a mixed bag…” His evaluation began. “Q1 was amazing and so was Q2. Q2 might be better. But in Q3, I made a mistake on the first and only lap. The tires were still a little cold. Then Oscar (Biastri) fell and the track got worse.
“I’m a little disappointed about it, but there are positives. In Q2 we technically did the fastest lap on Saturday. So our car is the fastest. Or not.” he joked. “But it was still an amazing day. We worked hard, also at the factory, to have the developments ready for the weekend. I hope this first place will be followed by many more in the future.”
“Conditions are given. As a team, we are very good at taking advantage of these opportunities and situations. In terms of racing speed, it looked good on Friday (in dry practice). Does it look like it won’t rain on the race now? At least the propellers will dry out.” – he concluded, referring to the fact that it still seemed uncertain under what circumstances the competition would take place.
