Once again, the most livable city in the world

Vienna has once again become the most livable city in the world, according to an independent survey, which ranks 173 cities in the world based on aspects such as health, education, stability, infrastructure, and the environment.



In the 2023 Global Liveability Index of the Economic Information Unit (EIU) conducted by The Economist magazine, Vienna won first place, just like last year, due to its reliable infrastructure, outstanding cultural life, and impeccable education and health services.

Several times over the years, it has been followed by Denmark’s Copenhagen, which has also retained the second spot. While Australia’s Melbourne and Sydney have slipped to the bottom of the list in recent years (Sydney recently dropped out of the top 10, and Melbourne is tied for 10th with Japan’s Osaka in 2022), both are back on the list, finishing third and fourth, respectively. It was received.


Canada was well represented this year, with three of its cities, Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto, making it into the top ten. Meanwhile, Switzerland rounded out the top ten, with Zurich in sixth and Geneva tied for seventh with Calgary. Osaka, Japan, which saw a slight improvement in its culture and environment rankings due to the lifting of Covid-related restrictions, is also in the top ten.

It is interesting that the quality of life has improved the most in the cities of the Asia-Pacific region compared to last year, which, according to the study, is due to the recovery of these cities from the epidemic. In the list, which ranks the 10 most advanced cities in the ranking, 8 cities are in this area. Top-ranked Wellington (New Zealand) moved up 35 places to No. 23, Auckland (New Zealand) rose 25 places, and Hanoi (Vietnam) rose 20 places thanks to the lifting of Covid restrictions. This list also includes Perth in Australia, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Jakarta (Indonesia), and Hong Kong. Fourth place on the list is the neighboring city of Bucharest, which moved from 21st to 99th.

Although Europe ranks strongly in the ranking of the most livable cities, it also dominates the list of cities that suffered the largest decline. Edinburgh comes at the top of the ranking, falling 23 places, followed by Stockholm, Sweden, and two American cities, Los Angeles and San Diego. The capital of the United Kingdom, London, also fell a lot in the ranking, and the ranking also includes Manchester in England, Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Lyon in France.
