The Gold Cup tournament has begun, the most important tournament for the countries of North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF region). The host of the event – as always – this year is the United States. The top two teams from the four groups of four advance to the knockout stage.
United States – Jamaica
The Jamaicans quickly took the lead in the game against the American hosts, then missed a penalty kick that the United States punished with a goal by Brandon Vazquez in the 88th minute.
Trinidad and Tobago – Saint Kitts and Nevis
And there was no doubt in the group’s other game, which saw Trinidad and Tobago score three goals in a convincing victory over Gold Cup newcomers St Kitts and Nevis.
Haiti – Qatar
In Group B, Qatar, newly invited to the tournament, advanced against Haiti early Monday morning Hungarian time. However, the Caribbean country scored in overtime of the first and second periods, so that the Haitians scored three points in a thrilling final game.
Mexico and Honduras
Mexico, with the most wins (eight), played as opponents against Honduras. Luis Romo took the lead in the first minute and then scored again midway through the period. Mexico also scored twice in the second half to start the Gold Cup on a high note.
