Four cases were identified in Florida and one in Texas within two months. In its warning, the CDC confirmed that the onset of malaria Treat it as a “medical emergency”.Patients with suspicious symptoms should be examined promptly.
However, the statement added that the risk of contracting malaria remains low in the United States, and that the vast majority of those infected — 95 percent — became infected during some kind of trip to Africa.
Florida officials have issued an alert about the mosquito-borne disease, advising people to drain the water from their pools, make sure windows are closed and use mosquito repellent.
In Texas, a warning has also been issued and doctors have been warned to ask patients with suspicious symptoms where they have been, whether they have traveled to an area where they may have contracted malaria.
Malaria is caused by parasites that are transmitted by certain female mosquitoes. Symptoms of the disease include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue, and nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur. In some cases, the infection can cause life-threatening damage – kidney failure, stroke, or coma.
