Semmelweis University celebrated the 205th birthday of its namesake, Ignác Semmelweis, as well as Hungarian Health Care Day on June 30 with four events. Ignác Semmelweis was commemorated with wreaths and salutes at three locations, and at the end of the series of programmes, nearly 200 university citizens were able to receive diplomas and appointments at the ceremony organized in the Theoretical Block on Nagyvárad Square.
This year, the day-long series of festivities also kicked off at the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History, Library and Archives, where Dr. Peter Sotoni, Head of Department, Chief Clinical Physician, Deputy Head of Vascular Surgery File at the Városmajor Heart and Vascular Clinic, made a speech, and then those present laid a wreath in honor of the university of the same name. The series of events continued to commemorate one of the world’s most famous doctors at the Semmelweis Statue in front of Sent Ruckus Hospital. Dr. Bela Merkeli, Rector of Semmelweis University, emphasized in his speech how important it is for Ignac Semmelweis to believe in his own truth, in the power of science and in the fact that old bad habits can be replaced by good new practice. In celebration of the 205th anniversary of the birth of the university of the same name, Dr. Bella Merkley lays a wreath.
