The US government recommendation states that the PRC government will arbitrarily enforce laws, including prohibiting citizens of the United States and other countries from leaving the country “without a fair and transparent process”.
According to the US warning, Americans traveling to or living in China may be detained by authorities, as access to consular services and information will not be provided.
The US government has issued a similar warning to Macau, which also belongs to China, and in the case of Hong Kong, it is asking US citizens traveling there to exercise extra caution.
So far, China has not officially responded to the US government’s warning. The Beijing government dismissed the latest US warnings as generally politically motivated and responded by issuing a travel advisory for its citizens to the US, citing the risks of crime, discrimination against Asians and the high cost of emergency medical care.
The travel advisory for China, updated from July, is the third most severe warning on the US State Department’s four-point scale.
