You can’t just take pictures, the store in Barcelona asks for money from people who don’t buy anything

A beautiful new world.

The deli in Barcelona strikes again with a patina of tourists who fill the store without making a purchase by offering a fee of five euros.

Located in the Eixample district, Queviures Múrria opened in 1898 and is one of the most popular trendy shops in the city selling mainly premium food products. Its striking facade, original counter, mahogany furniture, and signs and advertisements from the 1920s make it very attractive to tourists, who love taking pictures and selfies there, but don’t buy it all.

The deli staff previously joked that they should charge those who come into the store just to like it, but have no intention of spending any money anyway.

The joke is now a reality after the management put up a sign to scare off tourists who just wanted to have a look.

The sign says you have to pay five euros (about 1,900 forts) per person to see it.

Although none of the people who didn’t pay are currently being held responsible, according to store manager Tony Merino, the number of people who come just to take a selfie has dropped sharply. “We haven’t asked for money from people who just want to come and see something, but that’s not the point,” he said.

Barcelona has taken a number of measures in recent years to combat overtourism. At the beginning of the year, the leadership of the Catalan capital announced that it would increase the tourist tax: the amount that guests of five-star hotels will pay will increase from 5.25 euros to 6.75 euros per night by 2024.
