The United States uses the seized Russian assets to support Ukraine
For the first time, the US attorney general gave permission on Wednesday to use some of the seized Russian financial assets in the US to support Ukraine.
According to Merrick Garland’s statement, the warrant concerns Russian businessman Konstantin Malofeev’s assets that were seized in the United States. Last year, the US authorities accused the Russian businessman of violating sanctions measures against Russia, which, according to the indictment, provided financial support to Russian individuals to promote separatism in Crimea. According to the previous announcement, several million dollars were seized from an account in a US bank, which could be linked to sanctions violations. Merrick Garland announced in February, in a joint briefing with Ukraine’s attorney general, that he would allow seized Russian assets to be used to support Ukraine.
