Each day was a struggle for Marina, but based on the various symptoms that made her life miserable, they finally figured out what was wrong with her.
Marina announced on her Instagram account that she had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.
“I have had symptoms such as profound fatigue, numbness, tingling, decreased appetite, mental fatigue, rashes and insomnia for so long that I don’t remember how to feel well,” the Welsh singer-songwriter wrote.
Marina first broke into the British music scene with her hit album The Family Jewels in 2010, but her success was overshadowed by symptoms that made her daily life miserable.
“My base energy was 50 to 60 percent… With the exception of a few desperate intervals, I relied on adrenaline and willpower to get me through the past seven days.”
According to People magazine, the disease causes severe fatigue that lasts for at least six months. Symptoms worsen with physical or mental activity, which are not significantly improved with rest. Headache, sore throat, and sensitive lymph nodes in the neck or armpits are typical for patients, but sensitivity to light, sound, smell, food, and medication has also been reported.
The 37-year-old Marina began her recovery two months ago when she experienced a sharp exacerbation of her symptoms and a burning sensation in her hands, legs and back. After seeing countless doctors, she began seeing a functional medicine specialist who discovered the root cause of her symptoms.
“Now I understand that these symptoms are caused by an overly sensitive nervous system caused by chronic stress. It felt like my body was stuck in fight-or-flight mode, and I was getting a lot of warning signs before the worst.” – wrote the star, who retired from the stage because of his condition, in his post.
The singer is confident that she can overcome her illness and get back behind the microphone.
