The situation in Hollywood is now very difficult, because in May the Screenwriters Guild announced a strike because of salaries and the advent of artificial intelligence, and now from Friday midnight the Actors Guild has also gone on strike, as a result of which the filming of many superhero productions has already stopped.
As we wrote previously, many Marvel and Netflix projects have been halted due to the screenwriters’ strike, which has resulted in Disney postponing the dates of several big blockbusters. The actors’ strike could cause even bigger problems since then Deadpool 3 and Venom 3 were among the first to stop filming also. About 160,000 actors and extras finish their work on Friday.
And all of this is just the tip of the iceberg, as it’s likely that very few studios will be represented at the upcoming Comic Con in San Diego – between July 20-23 – and we’ll hear very little about the upcoming movies and series. Although Emily Blunt and Matt Damon attended the premiere of Oppenheimer, they didn’t stay at the show out of solidarity. In the coming weeks, we’ll likely hear about more project shutdowns.
Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA (actors’ union) president Fran Drescher and his team went on strike Friday in front of Netflix’s Los Angeles office, and then in front of Paramount Studios, Warner Bros. and Disney. The union wants better working conditions and protection from artificial intelligence
