The Netherlands defeated defending champions Spain 7-6 on the opening day of the women’s water polo tournament at the Fukuoka Aquatics World Championships on Sunday.
The two teams met three weeks ago in the Super Final of the World Cup among the four, then in Long Beach the Dutch won 12-8 and finally became the silver medalists.
The Netherlands’ best player was Donnajváros goalkeeper Laura Aerts, who also received a special award for most valuable player of the match.
If the Hungarian national team is the first in the group and immediately reaches the quarter-finals, then there is a good chance that they will meet the Spaniards.
World Cup silver medal winning team Attila Peru will jump into the pool against the Canadians from 1:30pm Hungarian time, the meeting to be broadcast live by M4 Sport.
