The Roman population restrained itself

In Romania, in the first five months of 2023, 20,563.1 million kilowatt-hours of electrical energy were consumed nationally. This means that consumption decreased by 7.5 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. Industrial firms consumed 5.2 percent less electricity, according to data from the Institute for National Statistics (INS). 20.4 percent less electricity was used for general lighting.

Savings with surplus production

The consumption of the population decreased by 13.6 percent. Meanwhile, electricity production increased. Thanks to the revival of hydroelectric power plants, 28,407.3 million kilowatt-hours of electrical energy have been added to the Romanian electric grid, which is more than 1,000 million kilowatt-hours more than the previous year – he writes – He writes Based on the article by Economedia.ro, Maszol.ro, a Hungarian-language news portal from Cluj.

Hydroelectric plants produced 43 percent more electricity than last year, which is easy to explain. Due to last year’s drought, the level of water tanks has dropped, hampering production. Production of gas and coal-fired power plants decreased by more than 14 percent compared to the first five months of last year. The Sirnavoda nuclear power plant mainly produced electricity last year. Its performance decreased by less than one percent.

Wind turbines produced significantly more electricity than last year, but the performance of solar farms was much lower than in the previous year. The balance of exports and imports has changed dramatically: in recent years, Romania has partially supplied its domestic consumption with imports. This year, nearly 5,500 million kilowatt-hours of electricity were exported.
