Aston Martin expected to struggle at Silverstone, they expected more from Hungary – compared to that, they finished even further, in the last two spots.
Ahead, Fernando Alonso believed that a maximum of fifth or sixth place was possible for Aston Martin from the eighth starting grid at the Hungaroring – as it turned out, the Spaniard overestimated the car’s potential. Instead of the expected lead, he finished seventh behind him at the British Grand Prix, finishing ninth.
“At Silverstone we were expecting to struggle a little bit, but before Budapest we thought we would be somewhat stronger here. It didn’t happen that way, so we’ll try to analyze it and come back stronger next week at Spa,” said Alonso after his weakest Sunday setting this year.
Both teams held the points-scoring positions in pairs at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with the Red Bulls and two McLarens, Mercedes and Ferraris finishing ahead of two Aston Martins. Although on paper the Hungarians preferred the AMR23 with its slower corners, according to Alonso, they had no chance of beating any of their rivals.
“We weren’t fast enough to challenge anyone up front, but we weren’t threatened from behind either. Those three points were the limit for ninth and tenth today. Ninth place probably reflects our pace, we are behind Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren. We saw more or less the same in qualifying and racing.”
Aston is puzzled as to why the others are so fast
Since the last two or three races, McLaren has taken on the role previously played by Aston Martin and Alonso: regularly fighting for the podium with a big jump. But other teams were also able to jump past races: they could not find an explanation for these flashes in Aston.
“We want to understand this in every race, many questions arise in all of us, but we never know why. In Austria, Hülkenberg and Haas finished fourth in qualifying, which surprised everyone. At Silverstone, Williams was very fast, and here it was Alfa Romeo that also surprised everyone. In races, conditions are usually mild, and the top teams finish in front. We are at the end of this streak and we have to get back to the start,” Alonso said.
