Locals are increasingly frustrated with restaurants seeking to maximize profits for tourists.
Solo travelers visiting Barcelona may soon find themselves hungry because some restaurants have banned guests from eating alone.
Unsurprisingly, the amphitheaters are incredibly popular in the spring and summer when millions of tourists flock to the city. The bad news for individual diners is that restaurateurs tend to prefer groups that bring in more money for them. In the center of Barcelona, some restaurants – mainly on Carrer de Blai, known for its tapas bars, and in the Eixample district – send single diners straight away.
The daily newspaper El Pais reported that the waiters make excuses such as that they have a full house. For guests arriving alone, a cold reception is probably not unusual, as nowadays it is common for them to be crammed into a space next to the bathroom or kitchen, or even perched in a hidden corner.
But now Barcelona residents are also feeling the effects of overtourism. One local said that one night he tried several places, but they were all turned away – despite the fact that there were empty tables.
– On the first balcony, where I got a table, the waiter came quickly and told me he had a reservation. It wasn’t. He said that as soon as I stood up, a group of foreigners who were standing behind me sat down. At another, he was told he only had twenty minutes to eat his food, while at the third he was told the terrace was only for groups.
There are financial reasons behind the ban on single diners. Group tables are more likely to spend more, and tour groups leave more money than locals. So Barcelonais are increasingly frustrated as restaurants try to maximize profits for tourists. Whereas in the past you could sit on the balcony at any time on a pleasant summer evening or for an afternoon coffee, today you are told no. As the temperature begins to rise, locals are forced to adjust to the dining schedules of tourists, and as a result, many restaurants refuse to serve those who want a quick drink after midnight.
Known for its architectural treasures, Barcelona is also a bastion of modernism and the avant-garde, as well as its stunning Gothic cathedrals. Modernism was personified by the genius architect Antoni Gaudi, who, along with his contemporaries, filled the city with fantastical creations. We have collected the most beautiful buildings in Barcelona, which are definitely worth seeing during a sightseeing tour.
