The United States and Great Britain agree to partner on critical minerals and protect intellectual property

The US President and British Prime Minister announced Thursday in Washington that the United States and the United Kingdom have agreed on a comprehensive economic partnership.

US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at a press conference after their meeting at the White House, cited strengthening economic security to counter China’s growing influence as one of the goals of cooperation. However, the agreement does not constitute a free trade agreement between the two countries, which was planned in previous years.

Joe Biden emphasized that strengthening and improving economic supply chains is also among the goals of cooperation, and mentioned that

Deepening economic cooperation between the two countries is essential so that they can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Arguing in favor of relocating jobs that have been offshored because of a lower cost of labor, the US president has made it clear that globalization is an unchanging reality, but at the same time, labor cost is no longer the only consideration.

He indicated that the United States wants to produce locally and export its products, but at the same time he insisted that transferring production would not harm its allies.

Turning to the ongoing economic competition with China, he mentioned that the trade initiative favored by Beijing is the “Belt and Road” expropriation programme, which ends in a dead end.

According to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the deepening of the economic partnership is also justified by the fact that China and Russia regularly steal knowledge covered by intellectual property rights. He said cooperation is important in terms of exploiting the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and managing its risks.

He added that he and Joe Biden also agreed to sign the critical minerals contract.

Regarding the termination of Britain’s membership in the European Union, the British Prime Minister indicated that his country should be judged on the basis of its actions, and what has changed is that the United Kingdom has more freedom, for example, in developing its own regulations regarding technological issues that will determine the future .

Regarding defense cooperation, the British Prime Minister stated that it remains a priority, and noted that his country is proud of the military support provided to Ukraine and will continue it. In his words, short-term and long-term Ukrainian support serves as a deterrent, and he hoped that the more equipment they sent, the greater the pressure would be on Russia to withdraw its forces from the territories it occupied.

And when Joe Biden was asked if he would support the election of the British Secretary General of NATO, he said, “Maybe.” He indicated that there is a need for a consensus on this matter within the military organization, and until then there will be more negotiations. At the same time, the candidate of the British government, Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, was described as very suitable for this task.
