A new feature in Android under development simplifies and improves remote QR code reading, and this can make code reading easier in many cases.

QR codes are becoming more widespread and versatile: in many cases they make it easier to open a website, but they are also used on public transport to validate mobile tickets.

But reading them is sometimes difficult, especially if the icon is far from the device and the camera can’t see it that far – in this case, you either have to get close to it or zoom in using the device. This process could be much easier in the future, as Google is working on a new code reader that will automatically recognize a QR code in the camera’s field of view, zoom in on it, and then read it.

The new feature has appeared in Google’s Token Scanner API, for now it’s only for developers. However, it may appear in the future in third-party developer software as well as Android QR scanner software, he writes the edge.

The so-called API uses Google’s machine learning on the device to read the code, and on top of that, in the name of data protection, the app will only receive the QR code, not the other things the camera sees – this is useful because if you don’t when using the factory scanner, The user, the unknown developer, cannot abuse access to the device’s camera during the reads.

Regarding the possibility under development, one of its discoverers, Mishaal Rahman, believes that it is expected to appear on devices running Android 13 and later systems.

However, it is a good question how effective it will be in the case of devices with not very good zoom capabilities and weaker cameras, if it is also available on them.
