Anyone caught buying from certain sellers can face serious fines in the southeastern Spanish province of Alicante.

Torrevieja is a resort town in the province of Alicante, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. Because of the new restrictions, tourists who buy from unlicensed street vendors may be fined up to two hundred euros (76,000 HUF).

Specifically, in a new campaign launched by the city council, vacationers are being warned that they can expect fines if caught with counterfeit goods.

Unlicensed sellers mostly sell their wares, the most popular products being sunglasses, hats, and clothing. The Spanish resort town’s population swells dramatically in the summer, so the authorities decide to target buyers and sellers. Federico Alarcón, one of the supervisors, said that in the past the police only focused on unlicensed sellers to confiscate all fake products, but now the situation is changing.

The campaign will be announced on social media and at popular attractions in both Spanish and English. The counselor added that the purpose of the campaign is to inform tourists who may not know that their actions are in violation of the law.

Smoking is already banned on twenty-eight beaches in the Balearic Islands, including Playa de Talamanca in Ibiza, Platja Gran in Menorca and St. Juan in Majorca. Recently, Caló des Moro in San Antonio, Ibiza, joined the organization, which aims to protect the health of local residents and keep the sands clean. The fines that can be imposed on offenders vary from municipality to municipality, but you can pay up to two thousand euros (about 770,000 HUF) if you are caught in a prohibited activity.
