Tropical Storm Hillary hit the California Peninsula in Mexico on Sunday with winds of about 119 km / h: one person died while trying to cross flood waters in his car. Hillary then moved at 80 mph (130 km/h) toward Southern California, where at least 9 million people had been warned of the risk of flash flooding.

California last experienced a tropical storm 84 years ago. Because of Hillary, the US National Hurricane Center issued a warning, indicating that the storm could cause life-threatening flooding in Mexico and the United States.

In addition, there was a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Southern California on Sunday afternoon, about 130 kilometers from downtown Los Angeles. Flash floods occurred as far as Idaho, and a state of emergency was declared in Nevada due to flooding. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in 12 counties.

In Tijuana, all beaches are closed, shelters are opened in government offices and sports complexes, and schools are also closed from Monday. Starting Monday, schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will also not open.

In California, residents put up sandbags, including in Long Beach and Palm Springs. According to the NHC, up to 25 centimeters of rain is expected in parts of Mexico, California and Nevada, and it also started to rain in the Southern California desert on Sunday.
