Gearbox has yet to confirm anything about the possibility of a Borderlands 4 game, but a sampling of some of the franchise’s recent titles might give you an idea.
Gearbox has provided very little information regarding the development of the next main entry in the Borderlands franchise. There have been rumors about Borderlands 4 indicating the plan for the series. Speculation about the release date, plot, and characters has been circulating for some time. But unofficial information should always be treated with caution.
Until last year, fans expected there would be some news regarding Borderlands 4 development, but there was only radio silence from Gearbox and 2K, which disappointed gamers.
However, the fans simply weren’t let down. Because the release of the spin-off title Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands gave possible clues about the development of Borderlands 4.
Based on the release of Borderlands 3 DLC and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, players can already be sure of one thing about Borderlands 4. Some fans were disappointed when Gearbox announced that there wouldn’t be any playable content in Borderlands 3 in 2019. After all, it was an addition New characters have long been a staple of the Borderlands post-launch experience.
However, in 2022, Gearbox has once again held its ground. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands started its gameplay without the main playable characters. Nor did he plan to expand the cast through downloadable content (DLC). This consistency over the years suggests Gearbox might do the same for Borderlands 4.
Recent development samples from Gearbox indicate that there will be no playable characters in the Borderlands 4 DLC
For Borderlands 3, Gearbox focused on the base four playable Vault Hunters. Instead of distributing your resources to additional characters. The developer cited data to support the decision, which shows that players rarely spend significant time with DLC characters before returning to their favorites from the base game. Gearbox wanted to enhance the development of the Vault Hunters base players know and love. So he embellished the characters with new skill trees to improve their mechanics. In the Borderlands 3 designer cut update, the main characters – FL4K, Amara, Moze and Zane – received new skill trees with new movement skills and abilities.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands follows somewhat the same philosophy, having no character options at launch, replacing it with a character creation section that allows players the freedom to customize their character, with six character classes to choose from.
Although the Blightcaller class first appeared with the Shattering Spectreglass DLC, there were no main playable characters, which is a bigger deviation from Borderlands lore. However, it is important to note that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is only an episodic game, and its mechanics will not necessarily affect the main series.
