Normally, Verstappen and Red Bull are quicker in the race, but the Ferrari pole-sitter Spaniard is still chasing a win at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz claimed pole for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in an amazingly close qualifying session – the top three were separated by just 67 milliseconds, so the Ferrari would be able to start from pole in Sunday’s race at Monza. The Spaniard knew before his last lap that there was still time in the middle and final sections of the course:
“Honestly, it was an incredibly intense qualifying session, especially in the third division”, said Sainz immediately after qualifying. “The three of us gave everything we could, we went all the way. On the last lap I knew there was still time at Askari and Parabolica, so I pushed on it and it went well, thank God, because I pushed really hard at the end.
As for Sunday’s chances, the podium is primarily floating in front of Sainz’s eyes, but somehow he will also push for victory against Max Verstappen, who starts alongside him and looks more convincing at the pace of the race:
“Yes, that’s goal number one,” said the Ferrari driver from the podium. “Tomorrow I’ll do my best to keep this first place. We need a good start and a good first stage, then we’ll see if we can fight with Max. He’s usually faster in the long stages, but I’ll do my best.”
Of course, Sainz also spoke of the support of the Ferrari fans, Tifosi: “I’ve had goosebumps since I crossed the finish line, I’ve been looking at the crowd all the first lap. I got out of the car and saw this, so I’ve had goosebumps ever since. Great. But already in the hotel, When we arrive on the field and wherever we go, we are always accompanied by great noise, support and encouragement. It’s the best feeling you can experience as a competitor and as an athlete.”
