Asylum seekers have not yet been allowed to enter the United States from Mexico

The White House announced last week that President Joe Biden’s government was violating this plan with the restrictive immigration policy of former Republican President Donald Trump.

Asylum seekers who have reached the southern border of the United States have to wait until now in Mexico to process their claims, which is why, on average, applicants have lived in camps set up near the border for more than a year. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, this regulation still affects about 25,000 people. This could have changed from the end of the week, but the Department of Homeland Security has now announced “in the current situation” that it cannot guarantee that it can receive asylum seekers at the Brownsville and El Paso border crossings in Texas. The ministry did not provide an explanation, but it is plausible that the cold weather afflicted Texas and the consequences thereof.

However, once Biden takes office, US officials caution immigrants not to go to border crossings at their own risk, as asylum seekers must register, and later notify them of a potential time and place to cross the border.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are also helping the United States reshape the asylum process.
